About me


I am a Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor) in International Relations at the Centre for the Study of Terrorism and Political Violence (CSTPV) at the University of St Andrews.

I previously held positions at King’s College London (2003-2009) and the Pompeu Fabra University (2009-2016). I have also been Santander Senior Fellow at the University of Oxford (2011-12) and Max Weber postdoctoral fellow at the European University Institute (2008-09).

My research interests include political violence, terrorism, nationalism, and ethnic conflict. I am the author of Ethnicity and Violence (Routledge, 2008), Politics and Memory of the Transition (Routledge, 2011), From Bullets to Ballots (Routledge, 2017) and When Does Terrorism Work? (Routledge, 2019).

My work has also been published in the following journals: Ethnic and Radical Studies, Ethnicities, Georgetown Security Studies Review, Mediterranean Politics, Nationalism and Ethnic Politics, Nations and Nationalism, Politics, South European Society & Politics, Studies in Ethnicity and Nationalism, Studies in Conflict and Terrorism and West European Politics.
